Various Applications of Biopharmaceutical Plants

Biopharmaceutical plants use the concepts of Biotechnology to develop important medicines that can cure common as well as crucial diseases. These useful medicines are produced from the cells of micro-organisms and also from the plant cell cultures and all the production procedures are carried out in bioreactors having different configurations. Some other methods are also implemented for manufacturing medicines that includes the genetic alteration of plants and animals.

The genetic modification of plants and animals is called as a controversial method as the manufacturer puts him into a risky situation because there are chances of failure. In some cases, the research work may be successful but the final medicine produced may not be approved by the government bodies because of some of the risks and ethical concerns. Thus the manufacturer has to bear the risk of losing all of his investments in an unsuccessful project. Another risk is also involved in the production of biopharmaceuticals, which is the cross contamination of genetically engineered crops with the food crops.

Biotechnology

All the Biopharmaceutical plants require huge and robust machineries that should be developed using all the guidelines formulated by the professional bodies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). All the medicines must be developed in "clean room" environment that ensures the complete safety of all the workers engaged. The developed drugs have to undergo various clinical trials for several years before they are approved. The developed medicine is not approved and released for commercialization in case it does not clears the guidelines set by "current Good Manufacturing Practices" (cGMP) and regulations prescribed by FDA.
