The Biotechnology Pride now in the Savannah

Yes, it is time these cubs terminated a career hunting beetles and returned to their roots. The primary food chain has just reached an ideal ecological statistic to permit reunion of the nation's staggering population of Biotechnologists (as engineers) with their Pride of yore.

And it's not just about portly and brassy old opportunity; it's the choice in the face of opportunity's reclusive habits when it comes to Biotechnology. Most of us this year have been loyal in our choices, thus far. Some of us, for instance have declined generous 'job' offers, knowing that all that glitters is not Biotechnology! And while this may be a well-proven fact for the countless other disciplines of the glittering kind, it certainly is a matter noteworthy in our case.

Biotechnology

In the course of four years, (the first being fraught with ridicule at belonging in 'Biotech' and concomitant identity crises in an engineering college) we are probably the only department that studies every subject under the blue sky: progeny, ancestors and even remote cousins of Biotechnology in warm familial bonding.

The Biotechnology Pride now in the Savannah

While this condition is aptly described by the title that we presently bear as 'Jacks of all Trades (and the remaining is unmentionable)', we have finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel, because being Jacks of all trades is indeed a blessing.

Need I elucidate? We know where to go next for fresh hunting ground. Whilst this statement might inspire a vociferous resistance from most of you, think again. Here is the meat:

Biotechnology spans several disciplines including food technology, agriculture, medicine and environmental conservation. No graduate of this field may be tagged a 'biotechnologist' and seek work in the 'biotechnology industry' but must keep her eyes peeled and ears perked for pockets of opportunity in these sub-disciplines. Alongside the listings a four-year engineering course offers a scoop of each for a student to pick for further education or for a career start in the industry.

If the devil's advocate were to interject at this point, he might say the wind is blowing every which way. Would our cubs then lose themselves as they gambol in it? The defense lays in this: that direction is gleaned from experience and for many the four years of engineering are quite prophetic. Just as in any other field, channels open up as you move on and get more centered on your specific area of interest.

A student may be proffered some guidance by periodicals that talk of the industry, new products and new firms. Doing short-term internships and projects in the industry also ups the odds of being absorbed into these firms. While this may be a universal engineering paradigm, it does affect the prospects of a biotechnology graduate like no other.

India in itself is a nexus of multiple fields, and products of valuable service might be easier to take to her rustic backyard.

This is evidenced by the fact that our government, namely DBT, New Delhi, and several sub committees offer industrial training programs and richly funded research projects that can give us better reach, and make resumes tastier to the recruiter.

While the downside is that the paycheck is just medium-small in the beginning, it grows with you, and growth in this industry is quick and respectable. If one is working in the Biomedical field, for instance, in the private sector like I am, and developing a diagnostic device that could hit the market in the next two years or so, not only has one the satisfaction of having created a high impact product but also of having done something original and of service to humanity. And it doesn't end there!

The Savannah is wide open.

Biotechnology and Colours

Biotechnology and the world of colours have always been intertwined. Nature's hues and tints are captured in their natural or synthetic state in a variety of market products. The flower markets of natural blood-red roses and gene-designed blue roses recently released in Japan are apt examples.

To-date notwithstanding the awe-inspiring snip and tuck techniques of genetic engineering, the legendary 'Black Tulip' of French author Alexander Dumas still remains the 'Holy Grail of the Tulip world'. Several types from 'Tulip Queen of Night' (1944) to T.'Black Hero' (1984) constitute 'the category of the 'blackest of the officially 'purple' tulips'.

Biotechnology

Nature's wealth of colours have inspired celebrity painters and poets ---French-born Hillarie Belloc describes in verse the morphology of The Microbe with its 'seven tufted tails with lots of pink and purple spots.'; and schoolchildren to explore the microbial world through the 'looking-glass' of Winogradsky's column with its purple and green bands ---consortia of the green and purple photosynthetic bacteria. Blue-green cyanobacteria contribute to the economy of Nature's important biogeochemical Cycles-the nitrogen cycle.

Biotechnology and Colours

The Red Sea may derive its colour and name from the red-cyanobacterium -- Trichodesmium erythraeum, but the destruction of numerous fish is due to the Red Tide population of the plant-like red-brown dinoflagellates. Pigments help classify the brown, yellow, red and green algae; and protozoa and yeasts such as Euglena and Pichia. Nature's colour artistry occurs throughout the biospectrum incorporating interalia green and purple bacteria, antibiotic-producing species of Streptomyces and Nocardia, fungi that color cheeses, blue-green anoles, rainbow papaya and trout, and green fluorescent proteins responsible for the coloration of diverse corals and anemones. Green, yellow, orange-red and purple-blue chromoproteins are the raison d'etre of fabled reef colours varying in the spectrum of daylight conditions.

Verily, Nature's palette of pigments and paints underscores the need of bioresources centres to capture, classify and conserve the planet's biotreasury lest extinction result from benign neglect and commercial exploitation.
'Biomimicry...... is a new science that studies nature's best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. ......Organisms use two methods to create colour without paint: internal pigments and the structural colour that makes tropical butterflies, peacocks, and hummingbirds so gorgeous. A peacock is a completely brown bird. Its "colours" result from light scattering off regularly spaced melanin rods, and interference effects through thin layers of keratin (the same stuff as your fingernails).'

New military clothing uses fluorescent colours, biosensors and bioinformatics at the nano-level to mimic natural phenomena of biomimicry and chameleonic colours. Geofabrics coloured for appropriate use contribute to landscape and urban management --- conservation of golf courses and park-lawns, and safeguarding creative and aesthetic instinct of humankind is embedded in of soil embankments and floral gardens.

The clean and green technologies. The first biodegradable green credit card was issued in 1997. 'Coral proteins put on the red light' in marine waters, and coloured glow fish function as indicators of pollution in aquatic reservoirs. Colours used in biotextile grafts make attractive and acceptable use of bioceramic materials in dentistry, medicine orthopaedics, tissue engineering and veterinary science.

Genetic research has contributed to understanding human eye and skin colour. The genesis of coat colours of cats, dogs, rabbits, ponies, etc. has been deciphered. The head colour of birds too. Coat colour alleles are used to produce sublines of mice for studies concerning ageing, cancer, cardiovascular, neurobiological and reproductive biology. The Big Blue mouse is used to research cancer and neurodegenerative disease. Yellow mice help localize gene mutations on specific chromosomes.Custom-made mice --- the albino, cream, brown and black models are research keys studying tumour biology. Indeed, 'the ability to follow coat colours' requires 'no complicated tools such as molecular genotyping' in 'the breeding and maintenance of mutant strains.'

Colours inspire, motivate and uplift humankind. Clinics and psychological facilities use soothing colours to aid convalescents. Colours exist in sports too. Winners express a sense of national achievement and pride in draping themselves in their national flags. In EURO 2004 - soccer and biopsychology met. To enhance local psychobiological advantage and patriotism the coach of the home team requested fans 'to wear something red or green' their national colours 'toface the orange shirts' of their opponents' in a qualifying match.

Corporate biotech is engaged in 'chasing the rainbow.' Former Vice-President Al Gore envisioned the 'pot of gold at the end of the biotechnology rainbow.' Entrepreneurs, however, focus their quest 'somewhere over the genetic rainbow'. UN policy-makers use colour-codes in combating, and designing solutions to problems of hunger and poverty. The UN Economic Commission for Africa in 2002 described 'Realizing the Promise of Green Biotechnology for the Poor' and 'Tackling the Diseases of Poverty through Red Biotechnology' ---technologies that involve using genetically-engineered mosquitoes with the potential to eradicate malaria; and gene modified foods ---golden rice and orange bananas, enriched with vitamin A to counteract the onset of blindness.

'Ethical challenges of green biotechnology for developing countries' arise, and, 'whether transgenic plants should carry distinguishing markers, such as distinguishing colours, so that they can be identified and not intermixed with other plants of the same species' is under review for use in regulatory work. In space biology research, transgenic plants using blue and green colours are being developed as biosensors to indicate presence of certain kinds of stress.
Nutritionists talk of a rainbow diet rich in micronutrients and vitamins that make food naturally attractive and appetizing for a 'good feel'status. Traditional medicine recommends eating naturally coloured foods possessing natural phytonutrients in their skin ingredients. A judicious choice of red (meat), green (salads), yellow (cereals and fruits) and violet (vegetables) foods contributes to the sustenance of long-term good health in combating artificial diabetes and obesity. Blue cheese and black truffles are delicacies without added food colorants; and supermarkets may soon offer carrots in red and purple with the orange variety. 'Research into different coloured carrots is not about making a fashion statement but about potential health improvements'.

In agro-trade, traffic-colours of amber and green define policies that distort trade of certain commodities. Amber box policies signify 'caution' relating to 'price supports, marketing loans and subsidies, and livestock quantities'. Green box policies cover 'research, pest and disease control, and crop insurance and conservation programs'. Blue box policies --a temporary WTO category that accommodates transatlantic negotiations, are 'redefined amber box policies concerning production limiting programs'.

Biotechnologies described in colours spotlight salient aspects of research for economic development. The Cordia-EuropaBio Convention 2003 in Vienna in 'Blue Biotechnology - Exploitation of Marine Resources' focused on the 'Ocean of Opportunities' for sustaining development through rational use of marine bioresources. Europe's catalytic role in 'Green Biotechnology in Africa' resides in collaborative biotech education, research, development, and market ventures.
In January 2004, a European Commission meeting at the Biosciences 'Technology Facility', University of York, UK, recognized that any 'biotechnology platform, developing bio-based products would have to be a concerted marriage of the 'White' together with the 'Green' and 'Blue' biotechnology sectors'. Unlocking of bottlenecks could be achieved through programmes utilizing 'the synergies between green, white and blue biotechnologies.'

In 2005, the 12th European Biotechnology Congress will use 4 biotech motors: white (industrial); red (pharmaceutical), green (food and feed) and blue (environment) in 'Bringing Genomes to Life' in Denmark.

The use of colour codes is seemingly the lingua franca of science policy in Germany. Sixty percent of the 253 biotechnological firms with some 43,000 employees in a survey by Hessen's Ministry of Economy were specializing in red biotechnology (diagnosis and treatment of diseases); 4% were specializing in green biotechnology (agriculture, food production); and, 1% was in grey biotechnology (pure industrial processes with an environmental nuance). In Baden-Württemberg, over half of the biotech companies excel in red biotechnology with smaller numbers in the grey and green sectors. German market studies emphasize the white and red biotechnologies. Red biotechnology accounts for some 86% of all biotech companies. Green biotechnology with 27% is followed by grey biotechnology with 10%.

In the USA, a 5 colour-coded security system from green (low) through blue (guarded), yellow (elevated), and orange (high) to red (severe) has been decreed. Adoption of protective and self-defense responses involves all levels of vigilance and preparedness to combat and neutralize the threats of terrorism and those of bioterrorism that aim at destruction of that country's security and its peoples. Colour alert systems for air pollution (USA) and inclement weather (Mozambique) are indicators of time available for precautionary action by people susceptible to asthmatic and respiratory diseases as well as in offsetting loss of life and bioeconomic resources.

In satire, a 'five (colour) level Mad Cow alert' exists. The alert levels range from eating cow parts (green) through limited beef consumption (blue) and exercise of planned protective measures (yellow) to symptomatic mooing and chewing of the cud (orange) to a switch to fermented food - tofu (red).

Using colours to describe biotechnology constitutes a new mechanism in:

- attracting school children to the microbial world in different environments;
- teaching biotechnology in graduate and medical schools; and
- providing sound bytes for use by non-technical policy-makers promoting the biotech powerhouse for sustainable development.

Dr. R. Colwell, Director, US National Foundation at a US-EC Biotech meeting in 2003 said: "If we could weave a Flag of Biotechnology, some say, it would feature three colours: red for medical applications, green for agricultural and white for industrial. In fact this flag may accrue even more colours over time as environmental and marine biotech and other applications add their stripes'.

In that context, the colour index below may be a useful guide with further additions as biotechnology and colours intertwine over time in promoting public perception and understanding of biotech applications for the cause of science, development, and the current and post human future of humankind.

Color Type Area of Biotech Activities

Red - Health, Medical, Diagnostics
Yellow - Food Biotechnology, Nutrition Science
Blue - Aquaculture, Coastal and Marine Biotech
Green - Agricultural, Environmental Biotechnology - Biofuels, Biofertilizers, Bioremediation, Geomicrobiology
Brown - Arid Zone and Desert Biotechnology
Dark - Bioterrorism, Biowarfare, Biocrimes, Anticrop warfare
Purple - Patents, Publications, Inventions, IPRs
White - Gene-based Bioindustries
Gold - Bioinformatics, Nanobiotechnology
Grey - Classical Fermentation and Bioprocess Technology

Is Wireless Internet Technology Bad For Your Health?

What is WiFi?

It is possible to form a somewhat informed opinion on the safety or potential risks of this new technology without actually being a physicist yourself.

Biotechnology

Quite simply, Wi-Fi is the wireless technology most commonly used to connect people to the Internet in schools, coffee shops, hotels and other network locations, or to connect cell phone users to one another. Wi-Fi is certainly convenient for travelers and students, but is it dangerous? Many believe that the low-level electromagnetic waves that radiate from the wireless Internet source to each individual user can be harmful to your health, even causing cellular changes and possibly cancer in some cases.

Is Wireless Internet Technology Bad For Your Health?

The area covered by a WiFi Internet connection is known as a "hotspot"; this is the area in which the waves radiate to give users access to the world wide web. It can span several kilometers, although the waves cannot pass through treed areas. While in the hotspot, a laptop user can simply connect to the network, access the Internet, and check their Email or do their other business on the run.

A wireless network uses radio waves to send communications across a two-way network. A computer's wireless adapter translates the Internet connection data into a radio wave and sends it to the wireless router - the one in your laptop. This process works in reverse as well, sending a radio signal back to the host computer.

Hotspots Useful Stations or Environmental Hazards?

Some report an unusual sensitivity to the waves emitted in these hotspots. Officially, the levels of WiFi electromagnetic radiation emitted into the environment in a hotspot are well below recommended levels and there is no evidence of any risk to humans. Yet some people blame WiFi exposure for everything from sleep disturbances, headaches and blurred vision, to heart and breathing problems.

Because no study has ever shown a conclusive risk to human health from exposure to these low-frequency radio transmissions, many simply shrug off the complaints of these people, choosing to believe their symptoms are coincidental or caused by another source.

So just how high are the levels of radiation in a hotspot? According to Dr. Michael Clark of the HPA, the published research on mobile phones and wireless networks does not indicate a risk to human health. "All the expert reviews done here and abroad indicate that there is unlikely to be a health risk from wireless networks" he says. "The few studies on cellular phone masts that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals claiming to observe health effects are not at all conclusive. The real problem is deciding what level of precaution is appropriate.

"When we have conducted measurements in schools, typical exposures from wifi are around 20 millionths of the international guideline levels of exposure to radiation. As a comparison, a child on a mobile phone receives up to 50% of guideline levels. So a year sitting in a classroom near a wireless network is roughly equivalent to 20 minutes on a mobile. If wi-fi should be taken out of schools, then the mobile phone network should be shut down, too - and FM Radio and TV, as the strength of their signals is similar to that from wi-fi in classrooms."

The Connection Between Technology And Childhood Obesity

Today, it is hard to imagine life without a computer or television and other electronic gadgets that have become so commonplace since the advent of modern technology that it is leaving us and our children with little time to enjoy nature and the outdoors. Not so long ago, parents derived much pleasure from seeing their kids cavorting in the outdoors beneath the sun or climbing trees and remaining somewhat more active than the kids of today who have found a virtual world in which to remain engrossed. Thus, technology and childhood obesity are closely related because we have now become accustomed to having our eyes glued to the computer screen or television screen and are otherwise taken up with different forms of electronic entertainment.

Boob-Tube And More Boob-Tube

Biotechnology

The new lifestyle that has taken over our children's lives leaves little time for them to exercise, go out and remain otherwise active and it is far removed from the lifestyle our parents enjoyed many years ago. Along with the sedentary life that our children have become accustomed to, technology and childhood obesity have become closely intertwined and our concern for our health has also taken a backseat as the life in front of the boob-tube continues to take up all of our children's time at the expense of their health.

The Connection Between Technology And Childhood Obesity

It is thus imperative to understand the reason why technology and childhood obesity are going hand in hand, and when one considers the fact that child obesity has gone up by more than three times in the recent past, the problem has actually now reached epidemic proportions and it seems that now we are breeding obesity in our homes as we are letting our children spend all of their time in front of the television or other electronic devices.

The fact is that when we and our children sit immobile for hours on end watching television or working on the computer or playing video games, we neglect to exercise and along with a diet consisting of sodas and fast foods are breeding obesity like never before. Thus, technology and childhood obesity are causing our children to eat more, exercise less and live sedentary lifestyles which is a cocktail that only serves up more obese children in our population today.

No doubt, there are a number of other factors too that contribute to obesity, but television is a prime example of how technology and childhood obesity combine to the detriment of our health. Staying glued to the television will mean a lack of exercise, focusing on excessive eating followed by an unhealthy lifestyle and thus contributing to furthering the incidence of obesity in our children.

Television and the computer are prime examples of how technology and childhood obesity are making kids do things that are bad for them and if you want your kid to not become obese, you should discourage him from watching too much television, which is a major reason why children become obese, and to also address obesity as a health problem which needs to be addressed and not to consider obesity as merely being a problem with how the child looks.

Biotechnology - What it is and What it Can Do For Mankind

Whether you live in San Diego, Orange County, in the farming areas of the Coachella Valley and Central California, or in high tech areas such as La Jolla and Irvine, biotechnology and patent law is vital to business.

I've been asked, "What is biotechnology really about and does it mean the end of civilization as we know it."

Biotechnology

It is often referred to as genetic engineering, which will cause the average person to go into a sweat fearing that he may have just eaten some genetically altered food for breakfast.

Biotechnology - What it is and What it Can Do For Mankind

But biotechnology is so much more, and in this writer's opinion, it is the hope of mankind if it is developed with an abiding respect for nature and a doctor's creed of ensuring no harm is done.

Today, biotechnology is broken down into four main areas: red biotechnology is applied to the medical field, green biotechnology is applied to agriculture, white biotechnology is in the industrial field and blue refers to the aquatic field.

In the medical field, biotechnology helps develop new medicines, new therapies, and can be used to use normal genes to target or replace defective genes or boost immunity.

In agriculture, biotechnology can be used to boost the yield from crops, reduce the vulnerability of crops to disease or weather, and to increase the nutritional values of foods. It can even be used to improve the taste or texture of foods. A benefit of biotechnology in agricultural applications is to reduce the need for pesticides or other harmful chemicals on crops that go into the nation's water supply.

A new area in which biotechnology is developing rapidly is in biological engineering such as in the development of bio processes from the laboratory to the manufacturing or industrial scale.

Biotechnology is not without criticisms and raises moral dilemmas. What biotechnology can solve, sometimes produces unwanted results such as residues and super resistant foods that may contaminate other non-genetically modified crops. Cloning has also stirred much controversy each time it is in the news.

But biotechnology in the future may also lead to new ways to clean up contaminated environments and the pollutants and wastes mankind produces. And as the world does harm to its environment, much must also be done to reverse these effects before it is too late.

PCOS Treatment Modern Biotechnology Remedies Alleviate Symptoms by Getting to the Root of a Problem

What is PCOS?

PCOS / PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome / Disease) is characterized by the formation of multiple cysts in the ovaries. These cysts are actually immature follicles. Every woman has thousands of follicles in each of her ovaries, right since birth. In the absence of this disorder, during reproductive age, every month one follicle from either ovary matures and releases an ovum (egg). In the case of a woman with PCOS, the follicle often fails to expel the ovum, which is what causes immature follicles to collect in the ovaries. This happens because of hormonal imbalance.

The Broken Worldwide Patenting System and It's Effect on Medical and Biotechnology Research

Whether you are employed as a scientist or as a company do research anywhere in California, including cities where biotechnology and other medical science is being studied or where research takes place, especially the areas around cities such as San Diego, Irvine, Orange County, Los Angeles, La Jolla, Riverside, Fullerton, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and other cities where there are universities or large research projects taking place in the U.S. and throughout the world, you know that patent laws and patent licensing is acting as a barrier to medical and biotechnology research and preventing advances in science.

It doesn't take a California patent attorney or CA patent lawyer to say how the world's patent system is today acting as a barrier to medical and biotechnology research that could solve many of today's worst diseases and preventing breakthrough treatments, medicines and even new seeds for better crops.

Biotechnology

A new report has come out after a seven year study and confirmed what most patent licensing lawyers, medical researchers and biotechnologists have known for years. The patent system in force worldwide is broken and preventing breakthroughs in science.

The Broken Worldwide Patenting System and It's Effect on Medical and Biotechnology Research

Without a means for sharing information, blocking patents are causing delays in developing advances in cancer medicine treatments and in the development of new food crops.

The report performed by a Canada based partnership cited as examples of medical advances being delayed as those of HIV/Aids drugs and cancer screening tests.

Of concern to scientists is an increasingly bare medicine chest of new life-saving medicines that are critical not just to the developing world but to the industrialized nations as well to address disease. New food crops are also lagging behind that could help address hunger.

And while stem cell researchers apparently patent the most, they collaborate least according to the report.

What happens is that "blocking patents" act as barriers to research and advances in biotechnology that could advance cancer treatment, new medicines and new crops.

When biotech firms race to file a "fortress" of patents around newly discovered genes, research by their competitors is effectively blocked.

Another example given by scientists is work on genes that cause breast cancer in European countries that has been held up by patents held on specific genes by one biotech company in the U.S. With patients in European countries unable to meet the cost of certain cancer screening tests, they have been effectively denied access to such tests.

A recommendation of the report is that companies should be allowed to form "patent pools" where they could cross-license their patented technologies without losing royalties from their patents. It is also recommended that governments develop other public and private partnerships to conduct joint research.

The criticism of the current patenting system is that it acts more as a barrier than as an incentive to research and the development of medical or other biotechnological breakthroughs.

When a patent office grants dangerously broad patents, entirely new areas of research, such as in the field of nanotechnology, can be cut off.

So long as intellectual property and patent laws act as a barrier from others utilizing and expanding upon one scientist's research, the laws will prevent scientists from making advances that can benefit mankind. This lack of sharing is preventing biotechnology from becoming the field that it once promised.

Nanotechnology: The Future Is Here

The advancements in technology have brought us to a stage where our inventions are getting smaller and more efficient. We are using newer technologies that discovered from new developments which eventually help us make even more discoveries. The latest technology that is breaking strides and establishing new bench marks is nano technology.

Nanotechnology, or "nanotech", as it is more popularly known, is the engineering of structures on the atomic or molecular scale. This scale, known as a nanometer, can be understood as being 1/1 millionth of a pinhead, 1/2500 of a red blood cell and half of a carbon nanotube. At this scale, molecules and atoms are manipulated into already existing structures, to create new structures or devices. It is engineering at a smaller scale than anyone ever imagined.

Biotechnology

Although the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology is still under development, its applications are expected to be limitless. The most important applications of the science are in the development of new and improved devices for use in the fields of medicine, electronics and energy. These devices will make it possible for us to cure illnesses that were previously not curable and make more efficient use of energy and may even bring an end to the global energy crisis.

Nanotechnology: The Future Is Here

One of the most important applications of nanoscience and nanotechnology is in the field of medicine. This field has been receiving a lot of attention from existing biotechnology companies (or "biotech" companies) and new biotech companies. Biotechnology companies are particularly interested in medicinal applications of nanotechnology, such as developing nanorobots, which will help in detecting infections in the body, to developing cell repair nanotechnology.

Further, nanotechnology medicine can be used to detect cancer among patients, in minute and difficult surgeries, in tracking the effects of drugs in the body, and targeting these drugs to very specific human organs. Nanotechnology medicine also has applications in day-to-day like of people such as developing better sunscreen using zinc oxide or titanium oxide atoms. From sunscreen to cancer this technology has a variety of applications. Once developed it will help save millions of life and make the lives of millions more a little easier.

Such developments of nanotechnology medicine are only made possible by biotechnology companies. Biotech companies aim at making this nanoscience and nanotechnology medicine commercially viable, and new biotech companies are entering the field, thus making it more competitive. More and more companies are entering this field and this has resulted in faster growth of this science. The competition in the market makes companies work harder and put their best foot forward. Once the science has grown it will be more readily available and more accessible for the common man as well due to the number of companies vying for a share of this potentially explosive market.

The next generation in science and technology has arrived. We have reached a point where new developments are taking place faster than we can put comparatively older developments to use. Thanks to nano technology or nano tech we will soon be capable of doing thing that we were previously thought of as impossible.

Growth Stock Investing Versus Value Investing

What are the differences between the two, and does one work better than the other?

Growth Stock Investing

Biotechnology

This form of investing was especially popular in the dot com era - growth investors invested extensively in high growth industries such as biotechnology and dot coms back in 1999. Growth investors bet on the stock's strong future returns, and are willing to pay more than what the stocks are really worth based on today's returns. This can easily create speculative bubbles - the most famous recent growth investing bubble was the one that burst in March 2000. Nonetheless, growth investors will also look to traditional industries if they predict a possible major change in trend or change in consumer tastes.

Growth Stock Investing Versus Value Investing

In contrast to value investing, investing in growth stocks also means foregoing the dividend yields that traditional stalwarts would offer. This is because growth stocks are also usually small to medium cap stocks - while Microsoft might have been an excellent growth stock pick back then, it has now reached the maturing stage where it would be difficult to double its value in one year.

Value Investing

Value investing means to invest based only on the actual value of the company today. The company must have strong assets, low debt, strong earnings, strong cash flow and a stable, established market position. The most famous value investor is probably Warren Buffett, who mastered this approach on his path to becoming the wealthiest investor in the world.

Value investors such as Warren Buffett are bargain hunters. They pay careful attention to the times when stocks are under-priced. These are the times when the market prices the stock below what it is actually worth, actually due to short term fluctuations. They look for competitive barriers that build a strong moat for the company; these include intellectual property rights, strong brands, and so on. These companies whether financial storms relatively well, and provide greater portfolio security.

Growth Stock Investing versus Value Investing

Given the current market conditions, growth investing is gradually shifting out of favor. Present market conditions suggest that it is time for bargain-hunting - value investing. The question that hangs over us all is whether we have already hit rock bottom, or if the bottom is going to fall out altogether.

Growing Success of Biotechnology in Biopharmaceutical Plants

Biopharmaceutical Plants are using the theory of biotechnology since two decades. The concepts used in this technology till now it was limited to infective world and animal cells are used for producing efficient drugs. But now everything has changed completely. Biotechnological plants are focusing more on using genetically engineered plants rather using other living organisms for producing effective medicines.

Genetically engineered plants are produced by primer of inheritable factor of congregation organism into the object and then using the genetic factor expression process. The genetic factors that are hosted into the target organisms can be used to develop the essential substance. In the middle of various organisms that are used for the development of Escherichia coli, Biopharmaceuticals are the most important. The first insulin which is used for the human beings was produced by this living organism only and many other different therapeutic proteins are also produced. Almost 60 % of drugs which are manufactured in Biopharmaceutical plants using the concept of Biotechnology use these living organisms. This is one of the efficient ways to produce potential drugs.

Biotechnology

In many countries there is rapid growth of PMPs. The plants that are used in the production of effective and reliable drugs are called the PMPs. The plants are also characterized as first, second and third generation plants. These plants are already used in biotechnological plants to develop effective medicines are characterized as first generation plants. The plants which are used very strongly and have filled their early measures are characterized as second generation plants. The plants which are still enduring study process and are still at early stages are characterized as third generation plants.

Growing Success of Biotechnology in Biopharmaceutical Plants

Many countries are using food yields such as maize, soya and non-food yields like tobacco for producing effective medicines. It is very important to take care that the genetically modified plants should not be mixed with other food crops. Twenty per cent of all pharmaceutical products sold are made by using biotechnology. Due to this fact it is clear that Biopharmaceutical plants using this biotechnology established as a very popular technology and it has very successful future.

Understanding Biotechnology

Biotechnology is looked at in awe by most people. The word itself is so intriguing and you are compelled to try and get a better understanding of the same. Simply stated it is a branch of science that is concerned with living things in and around the environment and how these directly affect human life and our ways of living. It involves the understanding of the genetic composition of human beings, animals and plants and how they are interrelated and how changes in their behavior affect the environment.

Going by the above definition you can well understand the scope of this science. It is such a vast field that it becomes very important to diversify and specialize in one field. There are so many branches and so many various aspects of this science that need to be studied and that's why biotechnology gets so intriguing. Apart from the diverse nature of this science it is also very important because it finds its relevance in so many fields and is very important in any type of progress that you need to make in society.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology is probably one of the most vital upcoming fields in the world and people have just gotten up and started taking note of the importance of this science. Interestingly it has been practiced for a really long time. You can go back to when human beings first learned how to tame animals and started planting crops for farming. Simple things like fermenting juices into wine are related to biotechnology and date way back. It is difficult to pin point as to when these practices actually started.

Understanding Biotechnology

The word biotechnology came about by Karl Ereky who was an engineer and this can be dated back to 1919. Modern biotechnology is as recent as 1970 and this is when the evolution of genetic biology came into existence. In fact these genetic revelations were used to prepare various vaccinations and medicines. There are a lot of jobs related to biotechnology work and it is an expanding field. If you are interested in biotech, then biotechnology work is a great place for you to start.

Due to the varied and the upcoming nature of this field you find more and more people trying to enter this field but it does take some qualification and not everyone is cut out to do research in this field. You need to be inclined towards biology and you need to select the science stream instead of the business stream during the course of your education. Biotech scientists give years and years of their lives for research in this field. A simple experiment can take up to a minimum of 10 years to complete as you need to test it and re test it before you go give your invention to the world.

Biotechnology has so much to cover and there is so much more that needs to be discovered that it becomes very difficult to keep up with the ever changing trend but this is something that is very important. You need to make sure that you are updated at all times because this science is ever changing. There is so much to learn and so much to discover! That is what makes this science so amazing!

Some Great Penny Stocks

The most important aspect of the penny stock investing is first doing your homework in a right way. You accomplish that and you are a winner; you neglect your in-depth research, you lose dollars. As large number of investors move into the penny stocks, it has become really important to know the proper procedure of doing the research. Things are actually not helped by the fact that quite unlike the mid-cap or large-cap companies which dominate the financial circles and media; there is too little coverage on the companies in this world. But if you look minutely at some sectors, you may easily locate the winners.

Though you can easily find a lot many penny stocks in every sector, in some of the industry groups you may find more winners. Some of these sectors are;

Biotechnology

Biotechnology Penny Stocks-

Some Great Penny Stocks

Biotechnology has today become one of the most happening sectors and you will surely find many winners out there. Many of the biotech companies are usually small and probably in the development phase. Many of them are on their way to create some blockbuster drugs. The most interesting and lucrative part is that stocks of these companies currently trade for pennies.

Renewable Energy Penny Stocks-

In the last few years the price of crude has appreciated a lot and at one stage even touched 0 a barrel! This has led to many calls to find some suitable alternative energy source which is renewable and environment friendly.

This has now led to the renewable energy attaining a preeminent position and has now become a widely followed energy sector. Interested investors can really find very good companies which are being traded in the penny stocks. While I'm not suggesting you to just focus on these two sectors alone, they can represent your starting point in the penny stocks, where the new traders can easily get the better feel about the ebbs and flows of this market.

When we are talking of where you should look for the winning penny stocks, we must also address here as where NOT to seek them. You must never ever follow any of the picks which come to you from those free websites, e-mails or newsletters.

Many of the penny stocks which are presented by the penny services are just paid shills, or some pump and dump artists. They are not at all giving you a sound advice and actually just want to make some fast money on your back, whether it's by selling the shares which you buy or just misleading you about the outlook for a company as they secretly cash the checks which this company sends them.

New Technologies and Small Business Offer Solutions to Job Losses

Emerging technologies of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and cognitive science can produce a fundamental change in our world. These technologies also offer numerous business opportunities. Unlike conventional technologies, the new technologies are knowledge-oriented rather than equipment oriented.

What knowledge orientation means is that if you have the know-how, or can hire someone with required know-how, you can often start your small business with little investment. For example, if you know how to develop custom business applications, you can start off with an inexpensive computer and a few software tools. Get a client, study the requirements, design a system to meet those requirements, code and test the system, implement it and support it till the client is happy.

Biotechnology

You will notice that most of the work involved is brain work, not machine operations or raw materials processing. This is what we mean by knowledge industry. Just like in the information technology example above, the other technologies are also primarily knowledge-intensive.

New Technologies and Small Business Offer Solutions to Job Losses

A Look at the new Technologies

Nanotechnology works with atoms and molecules. You go to these fundamental units of materials and try to modify their structure to create new materials with customized properties. Though knowledge is what you need most, working at nano scale, i.e. at one billionth of a meter, will require expensive and sophisticated equipment like electron microscope (ordinary microscopes won't help you).

Instead of working at these fundamental levels, if you have the know-how, you can get nanoparticles from suppliers and use these to produce a novel product. For example, self-cleaning glass sheets have been developed with a nanoparticle based coating that breaks down dust, which is then washed off the next time some moisture falls on the glass.

Biotechnology works with living organisms such as plants, animals and humans. Though techniques like tissue culture also fall under this definition, modern biotechnology focuses on working with cells and DNA. It is the genes in the DNA that determine the characteristics of the organisms. Modify the genes and you can modify the organism's characteristics.

This technique has been used to develop crop varieties that are resistant to disease and can grow under inhospitable conditions. Genetic therapy can go to the root causes of diseases in humans, unlike conventional therapy that focused on treating symptoms.

Information technology has already created a Google, Amazon and eBay, and numerous obscure but money-making businesses. It was knowledge and ideas, rather than investment in physical facilities, that initiated these ventures. The technology also created opportunities for such services as data recovery and Web content development that smaller players can provide.

Cognitive science is for those who are interested in the functioning of the brain. There are cognitive tutors that sense the way a student is approaching problems, and directs him or her along correct channels. This has the result of making learning more effective. Our brain functions can certainly do with a lot of improvement and a cognitive scientist can use his or her know-how to develop tools that can improve things of the mind.

New Technologies Are also Changing Job Scenarios

The job market is looking for people with new skills. Many community colleges are focusing on training up people with the skills in demand in the current jobs market. Information technology skills, for example, is a favorite field of such retraining.

The more ambitious among you can look at the other technologies if these interest you. There are numerous courses, short-term and of longer duration, that can equip you with specific skills.

Emerging new technologies are thus opening up new avenues both for businesspersons and job seekers.

Narrower Patents for Biotech Inventions?

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has made a controversial decision to hand down judgement on a case which had requested a preliminary ruling on the biotechnology Directive's legal protection regarding genetic material.

The case, which has been of great political and commercial interest on an international scale, centres round the company Monsanto, holders of a patent which claims a DNA sequence coding for an enzyme that protects plants from glyphosate-containing herbicides (CP4-EPSPS).

Biotechnology

With this enzyme, Monsanto have developed a soy plant, "Roundup Ready", which is resistant to Monsanto's own non-selective herbicide, Roundup, and is widely cultivated in Argentina.

Narrower Patents for Biotech Inventions?

A large cargo of the plant, which had been processed into soy meal, was seized on arrival at Amsterdam in 2005 and 2006 and on testing, revealed both the presence of the enzyme CP4-EPSPS, and the DNA sequence encoding it.

The issue at hand was that the patent protection only applied to the DNA sequence coding in a form in which it could be expressed into a plant, and not when it was present in harvested goods or as isolated DNA. On a general scale, Article 9 of the Directive 98/44 does not confer patent protection when the patented product no longer performs its function but has the potential to do so again if extracted and introduced into a living organism.

Despite the fact that Monsanto's patent was applied for and granted before the Directives adoption, absolute protection would only apply under the national legislation at the time of grant.

The ECJ concluded that patent protection only extends to a situation where DNA performs the function for which it is patented, within the product within which it is incorporated.

Despite the Directive's aim, which was to clarify existing patent laws and provide more protection, the Directive may have simply narrowed the protection afforded to biotechnological inventions.

Biotechnology Is Used in Agricultural Fields

Biotechnology is making great news in every filed. It is used in producing the effective therapeutic medicines and many other useful medicines which are made with natural elements. It is also used in genetically engineered foods. The new world of genetic engineering produced therapeutic foods like tomatoes and broccoli which has large amount of cancer-fighting chemical and vitamin-enhance crops of rice, sweet potatoes, and root vegetables to help and nourish the poor people. Soy, wheat and peanuts will make free of allergies. Many vegetable oils are useful to produce the useful therapeutic ingredients that doctors prescribe them for patients who are suffering from cancer and heart disease. Many biochemists believe that genetically engineered foods are the key to the next wave of advances in agriculture and health.

Many professional believe that there is a great potential for Biotechnology in producing the efficient and useful medicines, but they also fear for uncertainty and dangers genetically engineered products could cause to human life. They say that people should not make a haste decision in buying them as soon as they are released in the market first they should understand the product and then take a decision in using them or not. Some products which are genetically modified may not recommended to use they may cause severe health problems to the people if they are not fully aware of the product. Many countries like North America and Europe are having a debate on using the genetically engineered food crops as they may cause severe damage to the people.

Biotechnology

Many people are not aware of consuming the genetically engineered foods; it has been in use since mid 1990s. The great country like America, where people don't realize that they are eating these genetic foods, 60% of all processed foods have been in the market in United States of America like pizza, chips, cookies, ice cream, salad dressing etc. In the past decade or so, the Biotechnology plants that go into these processed foods have increased from nursery phenomenon to crops planted on a massive scale like 130 million acres in 13 countries. More than 50 products have passed through a federal review process and another hundred are undergoing field trials.

Biotechnology Market

The biotechnology market is an ever-expanding, demanding, controversial and lucrative market. As long as the need for something better and the hunger for knowledge exist, biotechnology will be the crux for much crucial development and enhancement.

The biotechnology market covers a large area, and has vast and crucial branches among them. Some of these areas are agriculture GMO, antibody technologies, antisense technology, biomaterials, biopharmaceuticals, drug discovery, emerging technology, environmental/industrial biotechnology, enzymes, gene therapy, general biotechnology, genetic engineering, genomics, informatics, instrumentation and equipment, molecular biology, pharmaceuticals, proteomics, regulation and bioethics, research and development, tissue engineering and wound care.

Biotechnology

There are more than 90 biotechnology products in existence in the world today, including drugs and vaccines which have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Apart from these, the research and development is still going strong, with over 350 biotechnology drug products and vaccines still in human clinical trials. They give hope to the sufferers of many incurable and unstoppable diseases ravaging the population, such as cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and other grave conditions.

Biotechnology Market

We can see major improvements in the advancement of medicine; however, we should also keep in mind the notable advancements in the field of agriculture, the use of biopesticides to reduce the hazardous effects of pesticides to the environment and to the crops, and the many ways biotechnology has helped the fields of pharmaceuticals and chemicals, energy and environmental management.

Biotechnology is also a lucrative market, as the biotech companies and the biotech industry generate revenue in the region of billion a year.

Biofuels - Saving the World Or a Waste of Money?

There is a steady buzz about biofuels, and there are some strong opinions about this timely topic. At one extreme are people who believe that biofuels will save the world from a dependence on evil petroleum and stave off global warming. On the other side are those who say that biofuels are uneconomic and just the latest government-subsidized boondoggle. What is the real story? No short article can cover the topic comprehensively, but this short primer will sort out a few facts so that you can decide for yourself.

Typically, the term biofuels means transportation fuels, replacing or at least reducing the requirement for gasoline derived from petroleum. This is worth remembering because biologically generated ethanol, vegetable oils, and animal fats have been used for centuries for cooking and lighting (think of alcohol burners, old-fashioned street lamps, candles). But today, almost no one is thinking about using biofuels for anything other than powering internal combustion engines (The idea is not a novel as it sounds; Henry Ford originally designed the Ford Model T to run on ethanol, not gasoline).

Biotechnology

Currently there are two biofuels available in large enough quantities to have an impact: bio-ethanol and biodiesel. Bio-ethanol is essentially the same substance humans have been producing for 6000 years in beverages by fermenting sugars present in almost any starchy vegetable or sugary fruit. The main difference is the refining needed following distillation to produce ethanol to the substantial exclusion of water. Only then can it burn efficiently in a truck or automobile.

Biofuels - Saving the World Or a Waste of Money?

Biodiesel is completely different, chemically. It is produced by reacting plant or animal fats with methanol to produce long-chain fatty acid methyl esters, which can be blended in substantial amounts with traditional petroleum-derived diesel and used as a transportation fuel. Biodiesel is, in point of fact, a good fuel, and it is cleaner-burning than traditional diesel. On some farms all the tractors and farm equipment are run on 100% biodiesel.

Both bio-ethanol and biodiesel are considered first generation biofuels: producible now using existing technology. Second generation biofuels are the next wave, comprising compounds that are more fuel-like such as butanol or hydrocarbons. There is a second generation biodiesel as well, using oils produced by algae in place of plant oils derived from soybean, canola or corn.

The real plum will be when biofuels-ethanol first, but eventually second generation biofuels such as butanol or hydrocarbons-can be produced from waste cellulosic materials such as corn stover (the stalk left after corn is harvested), bagasse (the sugar cane stalk left after sugar has been pressed out), corn cobs, wood chips, straw, and the like. These sources are waste products, already produced anyway, so no crowding out of agricultural food products will occur. I don't care whether this is called third generation or not. What is important is that using waste agricultural materials instead of food materials will essentially eliminate the upward pressure that current biofuels production has exerted on food prices.

What is indisputable is that every gallon of biofuels generated replaces roughly a gallon of fuel that would otherwise come from petroleum (the equation is not exact due to the varying energy value of different biofuels). This both reduces our dependence on foreign oil and extends our domestic oil supply. Economics are another matter. Biofuels cannot compete with petroleum at today's (February 2009 when this was written) oil prices of less than per barrel. But biofuels do help set a cap on the price oil. What that price level is remains a subject for debate and varies from one biofuel to another. Delving into the details of the cost of biofuels is a topic we will address another time. It is important, however, to acknowledge that the capping effect on fuel prices exists as long as biofuels are maintained as a viable alternative.

Regarding greenhouse gas emissions there is also a range of opinion. In general, however, most observers agree that corn-based biofuels provide a relatively small benefit in this regard, if any. Biofuels derived from existing sources of cellulosic waste would provide a larger reduction, simply due to the fact that no additional energy to harvest the raw material is required. How important it is to achieve this reduction in greenhouse gases is also debatable and outside the scope of this article.

One take-away conclusion about biofuels is the following: corn-based biofuels, whether first or second generation, should only be considered as a stop-gap measure, to be used until the cellulose-based technology has been sufficiently developed. If, within 2-5 years, the displacement of corn by cellulose-based technology has taken place in the USA, upward pressure on food prices due to biofuel production will have abated, and an alternative to petroleum will exist that both reduces our dependence on foreign oil and helps to put a cap the market price of oil.
